Let’s Get Ready to Welcome Our Friendly Lord Ganesha

The streets of Maharashtra will soon resonate with the sounds of dhol tasha, as Lord Ganesha makes his way into our homes and hearts once again. A festival that started more than a hundred years ago by the freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak to bring communities together, continues to be cherished by families and societies till this day.

For the 10 days that make up the festival, people come together to revel in the birth of their beloved  elephant-headed god who stands for wisdom, compassion, creativity, abundance and wealth.

Lord Ganesha is considered a remover of obstacles, and hence every good event is started by mantras dedicated to him.

His very form is filled with symbolism that transcends all times. A coming together of the animal and human form itself depicts the close interdependence of man and nature.

Especially importantly in these times when the conservation of ecology and all things organic should be at the forefront of our celebrations.

His large ears symbolize listening, be it music or wise words, his narrow eyes help him  focus and concentrate, his trunk is used to be flexible and adapt to situations, while his small mouth asks us to think before we speak… All lessons that are needed in every generation.

But the festival transcends the symbolism. It is a time when all of us open our hearts and doors to creativity, abundance, peace and goodwill. We welcome a new guest into our lives, even if for a few days and ensure he has a good time.

We prepare his favourite sweets like modak, symbolising the sweet rewards of our tapasya, and we conduct daily aartis to spread the chants of the Lord in all directions.   

Several groups of people fill these 10 days with various cultural events and performances to display the talents of the many people involved.

Because Lord Ganesha is not just our friend, philosopher and guide, he is also a beacon of hope, compassion and creativity.

He is a blend of man and animal, of the form and formless, of wisdom and playfulness, of indulgence and restraint, of giving and taking.

So this year become a conscious devotee of Lord Ganesha - consume carefully, give thoughtfully and celebrate creatively.
